Free broadband for Swindon

You may have heard about this in various forms of the media, but Swindon Council and partners will be rolling out a wireless broadband network across the borough.

The service will be free of charge and should allow for basic web browsing and email but will be limited in some forms. There will be a low cost, less restricted service available.

The partners who are operating the scheme, hope to make money from the scheme by selling on other optional services to their members.

The service will work by having small wireless repeater devices on lamp posts around the borough which will repeat the wireless signal. It will also address various security concerns by having wireless security set as default and also a personal firewall on each connection.

This is perhaps a model that could be repeated elsewhere.
